Nikon announce student cashback

To celebrate the start of the new academic year, Nikon have announced a promotion where any full-time student, lecturer or technician at a school, college or university can get 10% off any Nikon gear in a single transaction. That means around £170 off a D700, £50 off the RRP of the new D3100 (pictured), and the same sort of figure off a decent lens. If you're in the market for some new Nikon gear, now's the time to pounce, while your money will stretch that little bit further. What's more, if you and a few student/lecturer/technician buddies all wanted some gear, you could band together and get a massive group discount as long as it's all in one transaction.

120 megapixels, 9.5fps – and it's not a very late April Fool joke!

Canon Japan have announced that their boffins have squeezed an incredible 120 megapixels into an APS-H size sensor, in combination with 9.5 frames per second shooting speeds. The unit, the same size as the sensor in the EOS 1D Mark IV, holds 13,280 pixels across its longest side, and 9184 along the shorter. Compare that to around 4900 pixels at the longest side for the 16-MP 1D Mark IV and you can see what a leap it is. We're fascinated by it even if the press release is a bit dry, but if you have a minute, read through what Canon have to say about it.

Versatile Owl-272 three-in-one backpack unveiled by Kata

In many parts of the photo kit world, gear is being streamlined and adapted to be as multi-functional as possible. From DSLRs that are also camcorders, and printers that are also scanners, to lenses that are also coffee cups (well, sort of), this trend is set to continue. Kata's new bag is a three-function one, being all at the same time a camera bag, a day pack and a trolley bag. Whatever you need it for, it looks like the new Kata Owl-272 will do what you ask, and as Kata bags are usually among the best built you can get, it'll be a hardy tool to have around.

Huge list of new Canon gear – EOS 60D and lots, lots more!

Canon have unveiled a massive new array of top-spec lenses that has left us weak at the knees. A brand new 8-15mm fisheye zoom joins the L-series along with a 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, and replacements for the 300 and 400mm f/2.8 prime optics as well as new 500 and 600mm super-telephoto primes and new 1.4 and 2x extenders. On top of that, the long-rumoured EOS 60D has been unwrapped, with some controversial features to say the least. We couldn't believe it all landed at once, but then it's almost Photokina 'showtime'...

Translucent mirror, 10fps, 16.2 megapixels, full HD movie, advanced features… and £700

Sony have just released something quite different, in the shape of two new cameras that use an advanced alternative to the conventional interior mechanicals of DSLRs. Sure, the a33 and a55 look like DSLRs in both form and function, but appearances can be deceiving. Under the skin there’s no moving mirror – it’s fixed and translucent, and without the mirror movements to cope with, the a55 can achieve frame rates scarcely before imagined on a camera at this price point. I went to the launch and used both of them, and here is my in-depth look at what’s new.

Brand new Epod Diversity tripod features impressive versatility

Have a look at the new Epod Diversity tripod. It's an extremely interesting design that looks like it might be just the ticket for uses as, erm, diverse as macro, studio and just about anything else, too. With an adjustable upper section that you can do quite a few things with (from the looks of the pictures at least), the Diversity looks to be trying to blend the merits of a traditional tripod with a new kind of adjustability in a similar way as one or two others we've seen. The ability to hold a camera and a laptop has caught our eye, though...
